Late Friday, August 6, 2021, the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC), on behalf of the Customs and Immigration Union (CIU), announced a tentative agreement with the government. This agreement ended the strike that had started earlier that day.
The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) had been working without a contract for more than 3 years. After negotiations ended on July 26, 2021, CBSA voted to strike starting August 6, 2021. Even though 90% of the CBSA members are considered essential and were required to work, they did effectively engage a work slowdown at border crossing ports between the United States and Canada which did report longer lines and increased wait times.
The announcement of an agreement at around 8:00pm on Friday night ended the strike.
