MIQ Logistics has been providing updates on the logistics situation in Tianjin, since the explosion occurred last Wednesday, August 12th. The latest reports indicate that 114 people were killed in the blast, including 39 firefighters. As of this morning at least 70 people remain unaccounted for, and at least 700 have sustained injuries from the explosion. There are additional reports regarding the concerns around both air and water contamination near the site.
Our MIQ Logistics team in Tianjin has been passing along details pertaining to customs as well as port and vessel operations, below are the latest updates:
- The blast took place at 11:30 p.m. (local time) on Wednesday evening in a warehouse owned by Rui Hai Logistics, which specializes in handling hazardous goods.
- Reports have been acknowledged by officials that Rui Hai Logistics was storing at least 700 tonnes of sodium cyanide.
- Currently, the port of Tianjin has banned all imports and exports of dangerous cargo containers until further notice. Additionally, some carriers have announced that they will cease the acceptance of new export and import bookings of dangerous cargo to Tianjin until further notice.
- The MIQ Logistics office in Tianjin reported today the Tianjin Custom Bureau is at 50% capacity, and is working to expedite clearances for electrical data declaration.
- All terminals have resumed port operations with the exception of Huisheng Terminal.
- The port of Tianjin is the 10th largest port in the world by container volume.
