On Friday, October 2, 2020, the United States Trade Representative (USTR) office announced in a press release that it is “initiating an investigation addressing two significant issues with respect to Vietnam.” USTR will investigate Vietnam’s acts, policies, and practices and the harm caused to the United States Commerce related to:
- Import and use of timber that is illegally harvested or traded
- Undervaluation of its currency
Both investigations will be conducted under Section 301 of the 1974 Trade Act.
USTR has issued two Federal Register notices which provide details of the investigation and information on how members of the public can participate and provide comments as follows:
- Vietnam Timber – Federal Register 85 No 196 FR 63639
- Federal eRulemaking Portal http://www.regulations.gov (Regulations.gov)
- Docket Number USTR-2020-0036
- Written Comments are due by November 12, 2020
- Vietnam Currency – Federal Register 85 No 196 FR 63637
- Federal eRulemaking Portal http://www.regulations.gov (Regulations.gov)
- Docket Number USTR-2020-0037
- Written Comments are due by November 12, 2020
Please read the Federal Register notices thoroughly and provide comments. If the USTR determines that Vietnam’s trade practices unfairly undermine American businesses, the United States could move to place tariffs on the country.
