U.S.-NAFTA freight totaled $102.2 billion in September 2014 as all five major transportation modes – air, vessel, pipeline, rail, and trucks – carried more U.S.-NAFTA freight than in September 2013, according to the TransBorder Freight Data released today by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS).
The truck driver shortage is worsening, threatening the trucking industry’s ability to serve the nation’s supply chains. The shortage will almost certainly cause fleets’ costs to increase and shippers’ rate to continue to rise.

American Trucking Associations’ advanced seasonally adjusted For-Hire Truck Tonnage Index rose 0.5% in October, following a revised decline of 0.8% during the previous month. In October, the index equaled 132.1 (2000=100), which was the second highest level on record after August.
Compared with October 2013, the SA index increased 4.5%, up from September’s 2.9% year-over-year gain. Year-to-date, compared with the same period last year, tonnage is up 3.2%.

The Freight Transportation Services Index (TSI), which is based on the amount of freight carried by the for-hire transportation industry, rose 0.3 percent in September from August, rising for the third consecutive month, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics. The September 2014 index level (121.5) was 28.5 percent above the April 2009 low during the most recent recession.
“As predicted, the transportation ecosystem is finding itself in turmoil as freight shipments, particularly imports, climb in anticipation of a stronger holiday shopping season this year. The real story, however, is that the cargo is having trouble entering the country and moving quickly to final end users. Port congestion, especially on the West Coast, is causing trouble for retailers attempting to stock their shelves for the season kickoff on Black Friday. All of this contributed to domestic freight shipment activity dipping again in October, while total freight spending rose slightly.”

In September the index equaled 132.6 (2000=100), the same as in August and a record high. Compared with September 2013, the SA index increased 3.7%, down from August’s 4.5% year-over-year gain. Year-to-date, compared with the same period last year, tonnage is up 3.2%.”

The level of freight shipments in August measured by the Freight TSI (120.9) reached its all-time high (Table 2A). BTS’ TSI records begin in 2000.”
“The freight logistics sector was relatively flat in September, with a drop in North American shipment volume and a slight increase in total freight expenditures, or payments. Other freight indicators have shown that shipment weights have been rising steadily, so a decrease in the actual number of shipments does not necessarily indicate a drop in freight activity. In a typical summer trend, the economy as a whole cooled in August and September.”
“The second, third and fourth weeks of September were the three highest intermodal rail volume weeks on record for U.S. railroads, the Association of American Railroads reported. In the second week of September, volume increased 5% to 279,052, in the third week it increased 6.4% to 279,777, and it climbed 2% last week to 275,071, according to figures from the rail trade group.”
